Maria made her way back to her cell from the dungeon with Roksana. It was always a relief to be out of that place and was the only time ever that she was glad of Roksana’s company. The drab, dark green corridors were becoming depressingly familiar now. What once had been an unsolvable labyrinth of passages, when she arrived, were becoming part of a strange commute to her workplace. She noticed that the security doors that had been left unattended only lead further into the old fortress and the presence of the guards were sporadic. Roksana had explained come summer that every door would have a guard and the corridors would become heavily patrolled. But now, in the depths of winter, the skeleton crew of staff just focussed on the ways leading to the courtyard and to administrative areas. It made sense, beyond the prison walls was just hundreds of miles of icy death. They were pressed up against the Ural mountains which lay to the East. The bleak snow-covered peaks there were totally impassible. And to the West the nearest town was several days on foot. A journey no one would survive. The only vehicles on the road between the Prison and Vortuka were the monthly supply trucks bringing food and necessities. It was the perfect place to keep undesirables, somewhere to forget about them. She felt so far from home.

Inga was waiting in her cell when she returned, next to her the bed was a dry cleaning bag inside which was a red dress.

“What’s this?” Maria asked.

Inga handed her a note, it read, ‘Something sexy to wear for our dinner tonight. And bring your igrushka. Valeria.’

“Is she serious?” snorted Maria.

“It is a nice dress, you will look very pretty.”

Maria sat down with a sigh. Inga instantly wrapped the bed covers around both of them and pulled herself close.

“You will have to wear it,” continued Inga, “otherwise you won’t be wearing anything at all.”

Inga fiddled with her dog collar to get to an itch.

“You know you can take that off?” said Maria.

Maria said nothing and instead fidgeted and blushed.

“Do you want me to do it again? Now?”
